Dermarolling at home with Dermaplump

Microneedling was always a word I was petrified of. The whole Kim K vampire facial fiasco made my skin crawl. For a long time I totally avoided the treatment. However, lately we have become more educated on the treatment and thankfully, there are much less invasive forms on the market now including one that you can do at home yourself. Dermarolling is a form of microneedling but to a much lesser extent that some of the craziness we have seen on the internet in recent years.

Today, I want to give you all the facts about the treatment and tell you how you can perform it at home, in your PJ’s and without breaking the bank.

So what is a dermaroller? Well, although it can look like a miniature torture device it’s actually not that bad. And, for the results you get it is worth the effort (and the discomfort).  A dermaroller is just as it looks.  Its a wheel mechanism that has 500 plus titanium/stainless steel needles that when used leaves tiny pricks in the skin.

Why would it do this? Well basically, depending on the size of the needles dermarolling can genuinely work wonders on the skin. When we use a dermaroller on the skin it is in effect damaging or causing trauma to the skin which in turn forces the skin to repair itself . Over time this will give the skin a more even, plumper and smoother look and feel.

As we get older. Well, actually from the age of 25 our skin naturally diminishes the amount of collagen and elastin it produces meaning the skin is less plump, less subtle and less taut. If you use a dermaroller with 0.5mm or higher sized needles this will help with the reproduction of collagen.  Anything lower will not work to this extent.

There are lots of other benefits of dermarolling with a 0.5mm or higher size needle are:

Stimulating collagen production

Improving poor skin tones

Acne scar reduction

Hyper pigmentation (dark spots) reduction

Reducing fine lines, wrinkles and dark circles

Reducing pore size and firming

Improving elasticity of skin

Plumping skin

Improved penetration of skincare products

Just to note any needles less than a 0.5mm will really only help with greater absorption of products. To see real results you need to use 0.5mm at home or for any larger sized needles I would suggest getting it done in a skin clinic.

For the most part everyone over the age of 25 years old will benefit from using this. However, I would totally avoid this treatment if you have any active skin conditions. For example cystic acne (avoid the area completely), any open cuts or wounds or even anyone with active psoriasis or eczema should not use these types of instruments.

The one I have been using for the last few months and the one I find amazing is the Dermaplump (0.5mm needles) one which I bought from Roches pharmacy (link below). It is easy to use, easy to clean and isn’t over priced. It is important to find one that isn’t over priced as it is recommended that these are replaced every six months or so. Dermaplump actually recommend to dispose of it after every 7 to 10 uses.

To begin with this treatment should be used once a week and then once the skin is responding ok to this you can up it to 2 to 3 times a week. The skin looks instantly better but for the real improvements to be shown I would say you need to be using it for three to six months.

I use it on each area of my face (cheeks, neck, forehead, chin etc) three times in three different directions. So for example, first I would roll upwards (vertical) on my cheeks, up and down three times. Then I would move to horizontal (X3times) and then diagonal (x3times). Some areas (like the forehead) can be more tender than others. I won’t tell you that it isn’t uncomfortable. But, I would say it doesn’t necessarily hurt but depending on your pain threshold it can be unpleasant at times. Keep with it though, we really want to get this type of a reaction!! It means it’s working.

It’s best to complete this treatment at night as you can be a little red afterwards.

The most instant impact from this treatment is the deeper penetration of any products you apply on your skin after use. Therefore, it is key to use good skincare that is active straight after (depending on the product it can sting). I tend to use anything with Vitamin C to up the brightening effect. Your favourite serum will work even better after this treatment. When using this treatment, or in general make sure to use an SPF daily.

The last thing I want to touch on which is a tad bit boring but super important is hygiene. In order to ensure this treatment doesn’t cause any adverse reaction you need to be sure that your implement is clean. After EVERY use clean this with warm water and surgical spirits or even barbicide. After cleaning store it in a container that you can seal, away from any dust or chemicals. As I have already touched on, it is advised to replace the roller after every six months.
