essence Spring/Summer 2018 Update

essence are one of the best brands I know for updating their collection every season. And as the products are so inexpensive you can update your makeup collection for the new season without breaking the bank.

essence were so kind to send me some of their releases for Spring/Summer 2018 and I want to share my top picks with you today.

I always find with essence that they bring out two types of products, some are gimmicky while others are really high quality, staple products. Most of my top picks belong to the lather category, although there are some really fun bits too.

The item that caught my attention first from the new releases was the ‘you better work! gym-proof primer’ €4.40 for 30ml.  This is said to be sweat proof, long lasting and protects the skin with SPF 20. So what do I think? Well, I love the look it gives to my skin. It has a green tint to it so it does minimise any redness and I find my pores definitely look less obvious with this (thats also one of the claims). I also found that my foundation lasted considerably longer while using this.

However, it has one down fall. I break out from this product so bad. Because of this I only tend to use it when I really need to make sure my makeup stays in place. Although I would love to, I can’t use this every day. It does have a strong scent (which I like) but if you are sensitive to fragrance maybe test this before using on your entire face. It’s also quiet a thick product so drier skins might prefer this over oilier skins. Overall, it does a super job and I would recommend it for use when you really need to up the stay time of your makeup.

essence do some of my favourite inexpensive mascaras and their new ‘volume hero mascara power black’ €3.80 is bloody brilliant. essence says this guarantees extra volume, maximum lashes and the elastomer volume brush captures every single lash. I honestly can’t believe this is so inexpensive. I’m not massively impressed by the brush though. It is a tad bit hard but once you get use to this you you will love the results. I tend to apply one layer of mascara, leave it to dry and then apply another coat. By doing this I can get stunning, separated, full lashes. You need to try this.

The ‘glow to go illuminating setting spray’ €4.10 for 50ml is designed to set makeup in place and create a radiant, flawless finish. I need to say straight off, this doesn’t work for me as a setting spray. The spray comes out very patchy, uneven and almost ruins my makeup if I use this after applying my full face.

However, I really enjoy this as a pre makeup spray to give a stunning glow to the skin making my foundation look hydrating and glowy. I have also used a few sprays of this mixed with a matte foundation to give it a more luminous finish. Just because it doesn’t work as a setting spray don’t over look this as an illuminating primer.

The new ‘colour up! shine on lipstick’ €4.80 are available in 12 shades ranging from nude to deep, dark plums. These lippies are so soft to apply. What I love about these is you can customise the level of pigment to suit your desired look. Apply a small amount for a subtle sheen or build it up for a more intense look.

They do give a gorgeous sheen to the lips which makes them very comfortable to use and great for every day use. The packaging alone on these makes them look so high end. Another great addition to the essence range. The shade I have here is 10 rosey glitz and I love it.

If you want something a little fun to brighten up your makeup bag but still want it to perform as a great product I have just the thing. I really enjoy the ‘glow like a mermaid highlighter’ €4.40. Although this looks totally crazy it actually applies beautifully to the skin. It definitely is reminiscent of a mermaids tail but don’t worry this doesn’t translate onto the skin. Instead it applies as a beige, champagne toned highlight.

It isn’t super pigmented but I do love this for every day use. I love to use this not only as a highlight but also as a subtle eyeshadow, a blush topper and sometimes all over my skin if I feel I need an extra glow. The powder is so smooth and lovely to use. I am really diggin this beauty.

So there ya have it, my top five picks from the new range. There are also other products in the new range if you fancy checking them out.

‘get your glitter on! loose glitters & pigments’ €3.80

‘get your glitter on! glitter primer €3.50 (both great for festival season)

‘holo wow! sparkle stick’ €4.40 (gorgeous on bare skin or over foundation for a stunning glow)

‘storyteller eyeshadow boxes’ €4.95 (not my favourite shadows but they are great for young girls as the packaging is so adorable)

‘make me brow eyebrow powder’ €3.10 (this didn’t work for me at all, it was very messy to use)

‘colour boost vinylicious liquid lipstick’ €3.50 (available in 7 shades)

‘draw the line! instant colour lipliner’ €1.90 (great quality product)

‘tropical hand mousse’ €3.10 (perfect for in your handbag)

Have you tried anything from the new Spring/Summer 2018 edit? Which are the stand out products for you?

essence is available in Penney’s and pharmacies nationwide.

Don’t forget to rate the overall collection below. I give it a 4 heart Adorn.ie rating.
